Potton United exit Gladwish Challenge Trophy
Potton were knocked out of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy by Division One side Eaton Socon after a poor defensive display in the first half left them with an uphill task and a 4-2 defeat.
In the first couple of minutes Freddie Moriarty was fouled and from the resulting free kick by Matt Gilbert the shot was diverted for a corner. Soon afterwards Freddie Moriarty played a through ball to Lucas Tichmarsh who was in the clear but his shot went agonisingly just past the post with the keeper well beaten.
In the 10th minute Eaton Socon took the lead when a corner from former Potton player Jaiden Fitzpatrick went straight into the net. Mike Tierney did well to head a shot from Armiger off the goal line. Worse was to follow when Potton failed to clear their lines and Armiger scored from close range in the 13th minute. Freddie Moriarty saw his free kick saved and then he played a ball to Tichmarsh who was in the clear but he shot over the bar.
Potton’s defence gave the ball away and Armiger shot wide when well placed.A minute before half-time a good move by Eaton Socon resulted in Armiger scoring the third goal.
Potton had a lot to do in the second half and in the 51st minute an Eaton Socon defender tried to head back to the keeper and Freddie Moriarty intercepted to score. Tichmarsh had a shot blocked and the ball went to Harvey Vegh who shot wide. In the 69th minute Eaton Socon restored their three goal advantage when Khoo passed to Dawkes who scored with a low shot.
Fitzpatrick saw his free kick saved by Sam Galatis. Potton did manage to score another in the 78th minute when the ball fell to Eddie Connolly who volleyed his shot past the keeper. Charlie Clarke saw his shot blocked after delaying shooting and then Connolly shot over the bar.Just before the final whistle the Eaton Socon keeper pushed Ryan Lamond’s free kick onto the post and for a corner.
