Lucky escape for driver as car goes up in flames on A1 Biggleswade roundabout

A car went up in flames on the A1 Biggleswade South roundabout during the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters descended on the road to douse the blazing vehicle, whilst an ambulance crew treated the driver for minor injuries and shock.

The road was closed and crews from Biggleswade, Kempston and Baldock attended the scene.

A Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We were called out last night (August 8) at 01:08 to a car fire on the A1 Southbound Biggleswade Roundabout.

"Appliances from Biggleswade, Kempston, Baldock and a Specialist Rescue Support Unit also from Kempston were at the scene.

"Crews worked quickly to extinguish the car fire, following on from a collision on the roundabout, using breathing apparatus, a hose reel and a thermal imaging camera.”

She added that the driver, who got himself out of his car, was taken to hospital.
