Biggleswade's Hitchin Street roadworks extended until mid December

Anglian Water has now installed its new water main on Biggleswade's Hitchin Street – but work is now expected to continue until mid-December.

The new pipe is part of a £7.9 million investment to reduce bursts and keep water "flowing reliably" for the community – and will also include upgrades to the water recycling centre.

The Hitchin Street project started in the summer and was expected to run until the end of September. It was then predicted to finish by the end of November - due to "challenging ground conditions" – and the completion date has now been extended again.

Anglian Water stated: "We’re sorry that our work on Hitchin Street is taking longer than planned.

"We now expect to finish the work and reopen the road in mid-December.

"We know this means continued disruption for residents and businesses, affecting your journeys and daily routines.

"The pipe’s installed, but we need to work back along the route twice: first to connect homes and businesses, then to remove old ironwork and manholes that are no longer needed."

Road closures will continue to move along the street as the team completes these stages.

The team have been preparing the ground just south of the Teal Road traffic lights – and are getting the connection points ready so they can start connecting properties to the new pipe.

Anglian Water stated: "Towards the end of this week [week beginning October 19], we expect to move further south, past the entrance to Blunham Road.

"Once we’ve moved, Blunham Road will return to two-way traffic, with access to and from Blunham via South View and Holme Crescent. The map below shows how this will work.

"Please follow the road signs and check where. We’ll confirm when the traffic arrangements have changed.

"Thank you for your patience while we complete this work."
