Drinks for fivepence

Customers at The Parachute in Henlow were in for a treat 25 years ago this week when the pub celebrated its 50th anniversary. Landlords Bob and Rachel Maxwell decided to host a forties night and in keeping with the wartime spirit had a happy hour where any drink cost just 5p.

Three charity cheque presentations were made on the night: Talking Books received £435 and Sunnyside School and Fairfield Hospital both received £312 each. The High Street pub got its name from the Parachute Testing Unit based at RAF Henlow. Today it no longer exists.
